Kenya woke up to news of the death of John Michuki, a man who will be remembered for bringing sanity to the public transport industry by enforcing traffic rules that are since then referred to by his name. Michuki’s impact has been felt in all cabinet dockets that he has served; his impact has particularly expressed within the social media whereby kenyans paid tribute to him by remembering the work he has done in government.

Kenyan leaders have mourned environment Minister John Michuki who died of heart attack aged 80 last night. The minister’s body was transferred from the Aga khan hospital last night to the lee funeral home for preservation. Late minister’s wife, children and relatives arrived at the lee funeral home this morning to view the minister’s body. Michuki’s death has been received with shock and disbelief both in and out of parliament. Kenyans on social media were among the first to react to news of his death. Members of parliament have since paid tribute to the late Michuki in their morning session in parliament.

Vetting of Judges

A 35 year old woman has been arraigned in Eldoret Law Court for allegedly defiling a three year old boy. Rose Jemng’etich, was accused of defiling the minor last month in Kamwosor trading centre in Keiyo South district. The court was told that the woman infected the boy with a sexually transmitted disease. She was released on a two hundred thousand shillings bond with the case set to be heard on April 23, 2012.

Mutunga on Judicial reforms

Members of parliament were this morning divided on whether they have the power to change the report of the independent electoral and boundaries commission on new constituencies and ward boundaries. A section of mps led by gem MP Jackoyo midiwo wanted the speaker to clarify whether the committee on justice and legal affairs had the power to make any changes to the report itself or merely propose changes to be made by the IEBC. The report will be tabled this afternoon together with the legal affairs committee’s proposed changes.

The UN Security Council is to vote to increase the African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia by more than 5,000 soldiers, diplomats have said. The resolution will increase the number of troops in the country to 17,731 from its current level of 12,000.

Vetting of judges and magistrates will start on Thursday. The chairman of the Judges and Magistrate Vetting Board Mr. Sharad Rao said the exercise would be conducted in private.

A shortage of family planning contraceptive injection looms following the High Court’s decision to stop an importation tender worth Sh604 million. High Court judge David Majanja issued the stoppage order that may lead to many unwanted pregnancies, pending hearing and determination of the case filed by Famy Care Limited.

Several Cabinet Ministers and MPs have sent condolence messages to the family and friends of former Environment Minister John Michuki who passed away at a Nairobi hospital on Tuesday night.
